Pet Food Recall 2007
A large pet food recall occured involving many brands of pet foods. Something in the food precipitated acute renal failure. We are not sure if that is the only problem occuring.
It appears that some pets have been strongly affected with only small amounts of food, and others may not.
I recommended all my clients check through the lists and links to determine if they have fed any of suspected foods. If so, I recommended the pet(s) have a blood test as a screening even if there may be no apparent illness.
If there is no apparent illness I will allow for the blood sample to be collected and analyzed without requiring an exam. We need only a very small amount of blood and the test results would be available within 20 minutes. The screening bloodwork is about $61.00 and is a chemistry screen. If abnormal results are found an exam and further recommendations will be made on a case by case basis. Any pets that do not seem normal to you should have an exam and labwork completed that includes the above chemistry screen, complete blood cell count and a urinalysis. I would recommend that you retain receipts for any services for if the food manufacturers may be willing to reimburse for these costs. However, I have no direct information from the manufacturers that this is happening. I have information from another veterinarian that her clients have been offered reimbursement.
If you suspect any of the foods you have, discontinue using the food and save the portion of the can or pouch that has the identifying lot and date numbers. Any food that has not been opened should be able to be returned to the retailer. However, it may be reasonable to keep that food if needed for further evidence. Please check your recycling containers for pouches or cans that may be in there.
Here is a compilation of relevant numbers to call, websites to check, and specific foods, created by Dr. Emily Beeler.

Many clients are distraught by the recall, and are wanting to avoid feeding ANY commercial pet foods during this period. However, home-cooked diets are often poorly formulated. BalanceIT.com, a nutritional consultancy, is offering pet owners and veterinarians free recipes for healthy pets. These recipes have been balanced by veterinary nutritionists. Owners or veterinarians wanting recipes for healthy pets during this period should visit the BalanceIT website, select the recipe they need and use the promo code "VIN" to receive a recipe free of charge. A client account will need to be created, but no credit-card information is necessary. BalanceIT has assured VIN that they will NOT use any of the information to market to ANY persons obtaining a recipe using the VIN promo code.
Please note: these diets should only be used on a short-term basis. We strongly advise AGAINST feeding these diets long-term without proper consultation from a Veterinary Nutrition Specialist.
