Ultrasound

In 2012 we invested into a high quality ultrasound. It is a GE Logiq E.  We are gradually introducing it as cases match my learning curve.  We will alway offer referral to a specialist as best suited for your pet.

Ultrasound is a form of imaging used to evaluate soft tissues of the abdomen and of the heart.  We will initially use it to image the bladder for bladder stones, tumors and thickenings.  We will use it to evaluate the liver for size, shape, consistency, tumors and other changes.  We can evaluate the gall bladder, kidneys, adrenal glands, spleen and other tissues.

Ultrasound is noninvasive.  Most pets will not need sedation.  Most pets will need part or all of the abdomen shaved. We will inform you of the need to shave your pet and to what extent.

We can use the ultrasound to biopsy the liver and other tissues.  Biopsy generally will require sedation and/or local anesthesia but and ultrasound guided biopsy is obviously much less invasive then exploratory surgery.

The ultrasound is also used for echocardiology - evaluating the heart.  However, the learning for this will be deferred until much later and normally we will refer to a cardiologist for evaluation.
